So you’re planning a trip to Hanle. Good choice! This remote village in Ladakh is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places you’ll ever visit. But getting there takes some planning. Let me walk you through it.
First Things First: Get Your Permit
Before you even think about packing your bags, you need a permit.
- Indian nationals: Apply for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) online
- Foreign nationals: You’ll need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) through a registered travel agent in Leh
Tip: Always carry printed copies. Phone screens don’t always work at checkpoints.
The Route from Leh
The most common way to reach Hanle is by road from Leh. Here’s the route:
Leh → Karu → Chumathang → Mahe → Nyoma → Loma → Hanle
- Distance: About 275 km
- Time: 9 to 10 hours
That’s a long day of driving. Trust me, you’ll want to break it up.
Where to Stop Along the Way
Chumathang
Great spot for lunch. They have hot springs here too. Perfect for stretching your legs.
Nyoma
This is where you should spend the night. There’s fuel available, basic shops, and a medical centre. It also helps you acclimatize to the altitude.
Loma Checkpoint
This is where they check your permits. Important stop. Foreign nationals cannot go past this point toward Hanle.
Other Ways to Get There
By Bus
There’s a bus from Leh to Hanle, but it only runs twice a week (Wednesday and Saturday). It’s cheap but slow.
From Pangong Lake
If you’re coming from Pangong, you can take this route:
Pangong → Merak → Chusul → Tsaga → Loma → Hanle
- Distance: About 175 km
- Time: 6 to 7 hours
When to Go
The best time is June to September. Roads are open and the weather is decent.
Avoid October onwards. Roads get icy and dangerous.
Things to Remember
- Acclimatize: Spend at least 2 days in Leh before going to Hanle. The altitude is no joke.
- Fuel up: Fill your tank in Leh or Nyoma. No fuel in Hanle.
- Carry supplies: Extra fuel, water, snacks, medicines. Better safe than sorry.
- No phone signal: After Nyoma, network is limited. Tell your family you’ll be offline.
Final Thoughts
Reaching Hanle is an adventure in itself. The road is rough, the altitude is high, but the views are absolutely worth it.
Take your time. Stop often. Enjoy the journey.
And when you finally arrive, Sonam Home Stay will be waiting to welcome you with a warm cup of tea.
