Experience the Milky Way from India’s First Dark Sky Reserve — at Sonam Home Stay, Hanle
Welcome to the Edge of the Sky
Tucked away in the vast Changthang cold desert of Ladakh, at a breathtaking altitude of 4,500 meters, lies a village that few have heard of — but once you visit, you’ll never forget. This is Hanle — home to India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, the Indian Astronomical Observatory, and now, our humble homestay — Sonam Home Stay.
At Sonam Home Stay, we don’t just offer you a room. We offer you the universe.
Why Hanle? The Land of the Milky Way
There are few places left on Earth where you can look up and see the Milky Way stretching across the sky like a river of diamonds. Hanle is one of them.
Recognized as the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR) in 2022 — a 1,073 square kilometer protected zone — our village has become a sanctuary for darkness. No light pollution. No noise. Just silence, stars, and the occasional shooting star to wish upon.
This isn’t just a tourist destination. It’s a pilgrimage for anyone who has ever looked up and wondered.
The Science Behind the Stars
Hanle isn’t just beautiful — it’s scientifically extraordinary. Perched on Mount Saraswati (Digpa-ratsa Ri), the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and houses some of the world’s most advanced instruments:
🔭 Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) — A 2-meter optical-infrared telescope that has been exploring deep space since 2000.
🌌 MACE (Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment) — The world’s third-largest gamma-ray telescope, studying the most energetic phenomena in the cosmos.
When you stay at Sonam Home Stay, you’re sleeping beneath the same skies that astronomers travel across the world to study.
Astro-Tourism: A New Way to Travel
Astro-tourism is changing the way people experience Ladakh — and Hanle is at its heart. Visitors come from across India and beyond to:
✨ Stargaze with the naked eye under some of the darkest skies on the planet
📸 Capture stunning astrophotography of the Milky Way, nebulae, and distant galaxies
🌠 Learn the constellations from trained astro-ambassadors — local youth who have been trained to guide visitors through the night sky
At Sonam Home Stay, we are proud to be part of this movement. Our family has lived under these stars for generations, and now we invite you to share them with us.
More Than Stars: Culture, Adventure & Warmth
Hanle is more than its sky. It’s a place of living culture and quiet adventure.
